Correspondence, writings, autobiography, and newspaper clippings. The autobiography, "By many trails" is a typed transcription (131 leaves) relating Mr. Field's childhood and college days to include his father, Jacob A. Field, ranch life near Apple Creek Township, Bismarck, N.D., herding cattle, schooling, death of his teacher in a blizzard, prairie fires, Nick Spain, his dog "Mac", school years at North Dakota Agricultural College which included working with Henry Luke Bolley, and reflections on his life. "The blizzard" manuscript recounts the experiences of John Porter and his dog who were caught in the 1888 blizzard and survived. There is also a draft of his NDAC graduation research paper, "An investigation of the bacterial condition of the water of the surface wells of Fargo", his graduation oration, "Survival of the fittest," "A tale of yesterday" concerning the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and a clipping on a talk he gave in 1930 concerning birth control and evolution. Correspondence is with classmate Robert Reed from medical school.

Born at Ellsworth, Conn., son of John H. and Florence (Chaffee) Reed, grandson of E.W. and Amanda Chaffee. Family moved to Amenia, N.D. in 1886.
